Packing your Bikebox Alan

Securing your bike for a low stress journey

Once you’ve got the hang of it, packing your Bike Box Alan will be a doddle.  In fact Alan’s Boxes are one of the easiest boxes to pack.

Here are 2 YouTube videos.  The sequence of stripping the bike and packing the box is different in each so have a look at both and see what suits you.

How to pack a Bike Box

Take Note:

Some Mountain, Downhill and 29er bikes may require the forks removing, the rear mech removing and the frame turning round to fit into the box. Feel free to contact us before booking to see if your bike will fit in. You can always come over and do a dry run with your bike.

Some people use additional packing to avoid the frame and forks rubbing together – bubble wrap, a piece of a kipmat or cloth will do. You can use a plastic food bag for any tools you may want to put into the box. Remember if you are using them you will need cable ties for each journey and it may be worth having spares in case you need to open the box up whilst in transit for the Customs folks.

Follow these steps when packing your box

  1. Take any accessories off your bike.  Bottle cages and bottles can be left on.  If you have electronic gears you will need to remove the battery.
  2. Rear wheel hub – move the chain onto the smallest sprocket.
  3. Front chainset – move the chain onto the largest ring.
  4. Take the pedals off – Tip – Make sure you can get the pedals off before the time comes to pack your box – they may be jammed on so check a few days before.
  5. Mark the height of your saddle.  Remove the Saddle and seat post.  Keep the saddle attached to the seat post.
  1. Tighten the seat post clasp back up.
  2. Deflate the front tyre and remove the wheel.
  3. Remove the skewer from the front wheel.  Put the spring that came off back onto the skewer.  Put the skewer back through the front wheel axle.
  4. Put the front wheel in the front wheel section of the bike box lid.  Push the skewer through the skewer hole in the bike box.  Place the wheel nut on the end of the skewer and tighten up.
  5. Repeat for the rear wheel.  The gear cassette goes nearest to the bike box lid.  There is a recess in the lid for the gear cassette.
  1. Once both wheels are secured rotate them so that the spokes do not obstruct the central anti-crush pole.
  2. Remove the handlebars.  Collect any spacers and tighten any bolts you have loosened.
  3. Place the bike frame into the bike box.  The bottom bracket goes towards the long hinge at the bottom of the box.  The chainset goes in face down into the base layer of foam.  Loosely secure the frame and forks.
  4. Locate and secure the handlebars.
  5. Tighten all the frame and for straps
  6. Secure the pedals.
  1. Secure the seatpost ans saddle.
  2. Put any tools you need in the box under the base foam.  Stick them down to the plastic of the box if you wish.
  3. Add any other additional items – REMEMBER NOT TO MAKE THE PACKED BOX TOO HEAVY.  The box weighs approximately 11.2kg.
  4. Check the central anti-crush pole fits through the spokes of the wheels and into the recess in the lid.
  5. Insert the central anti-crush pole into the metal mount in the middle of the base of the box.
  1. Place the top sheet of foam over the frame with the anti-crush pole through the central hole.
  2. Gently close the lid making sure the top of the central anti-crush pole is located into the recess in the lid of the box.  If you press on the outside of the box when it is closed you will be able to feel if the pole has located properly.
  3. When you close the lid make sure the small lugs on the top section of the clips are located properly into the bottom section of the clips.  This will ensure a secure closure for the box.
  4. If you are using them, then secure the clips with cable ties.  Remember you will need cable ties for each journey and it may be worth having spares in case you need to open the box up whilst in transit for the Customs folks.
  5. Check the weight again – just in case.
